After selecting an object, I have to move my mouse from my object to the top of the screen to hover over a menu, then hover over the tool I want, then click the tool, then go back to my object. You always have to select and object and then select a tool. No default tool when you select an object. I quickly outgrew this app because I need exact measurements and I need to be able to print something and then go back and quickly tweak anything by a fraction of a millimeter. You can scale by a factor, but you end up doing math as you are modeling to get exact measurements. Nearly impossible to change dimensions of objects. Great for fast prototyping and rough sketches. SketchUp is great for exact measurements, but lacks with curved beautiful drawings. I did some rounded corners with it as shown below, but it was very difficult to get it perfect. There is a rounded corner extension (), but while I appreciate the effort didn't work for my ring. I tried the "Smooth option", but it didn't work right away so I gave up. 123d design review software#Maybe there's a way to tweak that, but I want my modeling software to create smooth textures by default. !(/images/blog/a696917931fe_478E/image_3.png)Īnd the edge of the circle isn't a nice smooth round surface. By default you can't round the corners of a curved face. !(/images/blog/a696917931fe_478E/image.png)īut then I tried to build a wedding ring – an extruded circle with rounded corners. I built this extender with SketchUp and it worked out well because it is made up of a lot of straight lines and I was happy with SketchUp. I wasn't inspired to create beautiful models with it. Nearly impossible to create perfectly smooth lines and rounded corners.įeels very dated. Guide lines, protractor, rulers are very helpful when doing detailed work. Great for drawing straight lines and exact measurements. Hopefully this post saves you some time as you go about researching your 3D modeling software options. 123d design review free#I’m going off of this Wikipedia list and recommendations from friends, but please feel free to make recommendations in the comments. I’m starting with the free options to see how far I can get. My requirements are: free or inexpensive, easy to use, precise and inspiring. I do relatively small maker type enclosures and product designs. The interface and the tutorials provided will make it possible so that anyone can use this program.I’m just getting into 3D modeling and I’m searching for the perfect software. 123d design review how to#When you will drag a 2D or a 3D primitive onto any other piece, the Snapping tool will make it go to the nearest face or edge.įurthermore, Autodesk 123D Design offers step by step tutorials and movies to all users, so as to be sure they understand all the key features that the product has to offer and they know exactly how to make use of all the options.Īll in all, Autodesk 123D Design is a very useful and powerful tool that will allow you to quickly and precisely create all the 3D or 2D models you might need. The Cruising tool allows you to drag a primitive from one corner to another and it will stay at the same height. 123d design review windows#You have a Main Toolbar to create and modify parts, a small cube in the upper right corner of the windows that will allow you to look at and orbit around the model you are creating.Ī few features that will surely be loved by a number of people are the Snapping and Cruising options. The interface is intuitive and has a modern design. Furthermore, you will see that you can use a lot of smart tools such as the patterning one, shelling, edge tweaking and so on. One of the biggest differences between most 3D modelling software programs and Autodesk 123D Design, is that the latter allows you to create a certain object pretty quickly, as the program offers you a lot of quick options such as already made shapes (primitives) to which you can add certain details. Autodesk 123D Design is a powerful, but easy to use software application that enables people to create detailed 2D and 3D models. ![]()
